Kraken's Unified Wallet: how far a futures loss can reach
Kraken Pro's Unified Wallet in Europe pools spot, Earn and futures balances under cross margin. What changes for collateral, and what traders should re-check.

Kraken has opened its Unified Wallet to eligible clients in the European Economic Area, so that one Kraken Pro account pool covers spot, margin, Earn and futures. CryptoSlate reported that under the default cross-margin setting a losing futures position can draw on the whole eligible balance, including spot coins and qualifying Earn holdings. This article looks at what the switch changes for collateral and margin, and what a trader should check before turning it on.
What happened
Kraken announced on October 16, 2026 that Unified Wallet is available to eligible EEA clients. The feature merges balances so collateral no longer has to be moved into a separate futures wallet. Users switch it on by hand in Kraken Pro settings, and eligible balances are pooled straight away. Futures trading also has to be enabled. To trade EEA derivatives, accounts must be verified, and new futures clients also answer a knowledge-and-experience questionnaire and supply a tax identification number.
What it changes in margin
The key change is the default setting: cross margin. Under cross margin, the exchange calculates margin across the whole eligible pool. A futures loss can therefore reach coins you bought on spot, which under the old separate-wallet setup would have stayed outside the futures account. CryptoSlate noted that Kraken's announcement did not name every Earn product that qualifies. Its wallet guide separates staking and Earn strategies from Auto Earn balances kept in Main, so it is worth checking which of your balances are in the pool.
Collateral is not counted one for one. Kraken says more than 40 cryptocurrencies, plus USD, EUR and gold (XAU), are accepted. Introductory cross-margin documentation credits bitcoin and ether at 99% of value and USD and EUR at 100%, and Kraken says these parameters can change. For EEA users, USDT and DAI count for nothing as collateral, through a 100% haircut. A haircut is the share of an asset's value the exchange ignores when it measures margin, so a balance in those coins adds no buffer at all.
Some products stay outside. Coin-M inverse derivatives balances and US TradFi futures are not part of Unified Wallet.
Cross margin vs isolated margin
Isolated margin is still offered on linear Multi-M futures. It assigns a fixed amount of margin to one position, and that position's possible trading loss is capped at the amount assigned. Cross margin does the opposite: it lets the whole pool defend every position. That can keep a trade open through a swing that would have liquidated an isolated position, but the cost is that a single bad trade can drain balances you meant to hold long term. The risk type here is counterparty and volatility risk spreading from one position to the whole account.
Exit also has friction. Open positions need not be closed to turn the feature on, but going back to separate wallets requires closing every derivatives position and active order. After that, balances sit in Main and must be moved by hand to the derivatives wallet before new positions can be opened there.
Where the main collateral coins sit now
Coinlytic's data for this sheet covers price, not funding or open interest. Since bitcoin and ether are credited at 99% as collateral, their moves change the size of the buffer. On Bybit daily closes, BTC closed at $81,769, down 1.7% over 7 days and up 0.7% over 30 days, 0.2% above its 50-day average of $81,583. ETH closed at $2,402, down 3.8% over 7 days and down 9.2% over 30 days, 5.8% below its 50-day average of $2,550. When pooled collateral falls in value at the same time a futures position loses, the margin buffer shrinks from both sides.
Checklist before switching it on
Questions a leveraged trader would re-check:
- Which of my spot and Earn balances would join the pool, and am I comfortable with all of them backing futures losses?
- Do I hold USDT or DAI that I wrongly count as margin, given their 100% haircut for EEA users?
- Should a given position use isolated margin so its loss is capped at its own allocation?
- Am I ready to close every derivatives position and order if I later want separate wallets back?
What to watch next
Watch for Kraken to publish a full list of qualifying Earn products and any changes to collateral ratios, which it says can move. For your own account, the useful habit is to review margin mode per position, not just once at setup.
