A stronger dollar index does not mean a stronger dollar everywhere

A stronger dollar index does not mean a stronger dollar everywhere

The Federal Reserve's broad trade-weighted dollar index combines changes in the dollar against multiple trading-partner currencies. Its currency weights reflect U.S. trade and are updated over time. The basket can rise even if the dollar falls against an individual currency.

That distinction matters in crypto and macro commentary: an index headline is not a statement about every bilateral exchange rate. The Fed also publishes nominal and inflation-adjusted real dollar indexes, which answer different questions. Check the series label before comparing an index move with a single currency pair or a digital-asset price.
