The crew of a US fighter jet shot down over Iran may be getting help from Iranian civilians, CNN reported on April 4. The report quoted claims that some civilians were "happy" the Americans were there.
These claims could not be independently verified at the time, and details about the crew's location and condition were not disclosed, which is normal while a recovery may be under way.
Information about downed aircrew is sensitive and is often limited or contradictory in the first days. Official US statements are the reliable source for the crew's status.
