The US Embassy in Baghdad issued an emergency alert on March 30 warning that Iran and allied militias were considering strikes on American universities in Baghdad, Duhok, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, according to reports at the time.
The same reports said all American staff were ordered to leave Iraq immediately.
Embassy alerts are precautionary and do not confirm that an attack will take place. The scope of any departure order can also be narrower than early reports suggest, for example applying to non-essential personnel only.
For anyone with a direct interest, the embassy's own published alert and the State Department's travel advisory for Iraq are the authoritative sources.
